Hydro Power Station Intake Screen Cleaning

ICEL designed and implemented the automatic control of a screen cleaning machine capable of lifting up to two tonne of weed and debris from the intake screens of a hydro power station in a single stroke. The screen cleaners have been built by Engineering Dynamics and Southern Cross Engineering and have been installed in a number of hydro power stations in New Zealand.

Although the cleaner is equipped with a cab, its operation is normally fully automatic with a cleaning sequence triggered by a screen differential or a request from the power station.

A laptop computer or a small operator panel provides a status display for the operator plus alarm history and help files to assist in recovering from fault conditions.
